The TroyShepard Situation and a reflection on our "silent" SA men

Written February 21st 2021

First off, let us assess the original (Which is still up at the time of writing)

Unfortunately what Troy expresses isn't unique or original in any way. Male fragility has always been a threat against the rise of feminism and progress towards equality and away from a patriarchal system in most western influenced countries. The discussion and concept itself are far-reaching, all-encompassing and entrenched in our very lives and beliefs, subconsciously and consciously. What makes Troy's situation unique, as it is not simple locker room talk and mumbles under the breath that we have become accustomed to with South African men and boys. This is the wide-scale, unwavering broadcast of ideas to an audience of 1.5m followers, currently sitting with 790.9K views on this video alone and in a country where so few people have the luxury of accessing the internet let alone social media platforms like Tiktok, this constitutes as a major form of influence. Troy's brash, uneducated, and ignorant views validate the "hidden" beliefs of SA men. The only thing that has changed is that these men have grown to learn not to say it so publically instead of actively changing their behaviour.

Maybe you are offended by my generalisation, and honestly, I would like to explain my decision.

Actively coddling oppressive systems and the feelings of those who benefit it, gets us nowhere. The real test of working feminism is finding the balance of showing love and compassion. The keyword is balance. This is the time to not show sympathy but rather correct and educate. Caring for others should never be at one's expense or the expense of the group you are defending.

I understand that might put off some people. I understand that my response may be viewed as dramatic and thus affirming of Troy Shepard's beliefs. However, we are in a state of national crisis in terms of GBV violence and limited access to basic needs and opportunities for women. With such a young audience base, it's important that Troy gets a "social media public spanking" to reinforce to his audience that it is not only not okay to say such things but it is reckless and there are consequences for your actions. Next time, just keep quiet until you have enough time to reflect on the implications and effect of your words/actions or least the consequences for them.

P.S - Watch the video below, as I really appreciate this particular response to Troy's video
